I always thought of the drag coefficient bragging as a recent, EV thing, but a quick google image search finds some interesting old adverts for cars that have drag coefficient numbers.
The Grand Prix wins it at 0.29, though Nissan and VW get consolation prizes for actually using the leading zero like everyone is supposed to.

I think those ads were funny until the VR6 developed cooling issues.

Thank you, I was just goin g to post that. The drag coefficient of the XT was probably the only thing allowing it to go >100 mph with a 97 hp 4-cy engine.

my cousin had a Camaro, 25th anniversary edition. It was so damn slow I think my 95 explorer could at least keep up with it if not outrun it

Those cars are from an era when aerodynamics f inally started becoming imp ortant in the wake of the fuel crisis. It was almost an aero arms race.

Not bad for 1969.
The older SAAB 93 had a 0.32 CD, but they raised the roof height on the 96 to get more headroom and it spoiled things a bit.

Is that really a bragging point?

I can’t find it but s omeone did a drag race between a base Prius and the most powerful Firebird of some early 80's year, and the Prius won. In part to aerodynamics, but also there were several years of really low power F- bodies.

I never got more than 30 MPG out of my Nissan Pulsar on the highway.

But when your Corrado won’t run you can still watch the spoiler go up and down..

Hell, you could get the Camaro and Firebird with the Iron Duke for awhile. That's not beating much in a drag race besides maybe a Trabant.

I wonder if it was though? I know they redesigned the front end in 1962 because the original nose turned out to be less aerodynamic than they had expected. (it probably performed fine as a model in a wind tunnel, but full size it didn’t live up to what they were expecting) And the third front end redesign (with the faired in headlights) dropped the CD to 0.31.
